Why???? I adore Stargate, and cannot wait for the movies, if only to see the conclusion.
The sad fact is, this is one of the only SciFi shows that could continue on after 10 seasons without over-using the plotlines. I'm sad that it as been cancelled due to human greed and stupidity.
Great franchise no chemistry after season 8. It is impossible to rate a movie no one has seen, so this rating is essentially based upon the continuation of the Ori storyline. For me the SG-1 series ended with Season Eight, the last boxed season of SG-1 series I own. The incredible chemistry and balance of that original cast which developed over 8 seasons is what caused this show to flourish as it did and had us coming back for more. Coupled in my opinion with the true "ark" and mythology of the show which were the Goa'uld and to some degree the Replicators which was intergrated into the Atlantis series. These seasons remain in my eyes as the best SciFi ever... I know the Farscape fans will hate this, but Browder and Black are what killed this show, coupled with the incredibly lame Ori stroyline and forgetable standalone episodes. Basically the show became too dumb and silly for my tastes and a lot of other vewers as well. Plots "may" have developed had the new cast gelled better on their own and been able to overcome the effect of losing the very heart of the show which was lost -- a mighty task indeed., I am sure SciFi would have continued the show had people continued to watch and advertisers were willing to buy-in to this evolution of the show. Yes I will watch the movie because I love the show, but no I will likely not buy the movie because I seriously doubt I would watch it more than once. Bring back an original cast movie I bet you could guarantee a box office draw vs. a straight to DVD release. Think about that, this should tell you something.
Its really not SciFi Channels Fault, these guys are wrong. I came across these reviews and felt strongly enough about them that I felt I should reply. Unless you where a flat out SG1 Fanatic it was clear from the last dismal season that SG1 had fallen completely Flat! The directors and many of the actors where taking the Fans for complete fools as they joked and played around with a once great show. To start with the producer's royally messed things up a few seasons back when they introduced both leading actors from Farscape into SG1, which left viewers like me wondering when Dargo was going to show up. Then from there the believability of the show started to diminish until actors like Christopher Judge, Ben Browder and even Beau bridges started to just have fun and forget they where making a serious show, Luckily some actors like Amanda and Michael still took the show seriously but with the overall tone of the show during season 10 being one of have fun and relaxation you knew it was going to be bad. It all started with the Episode called "200" which was supposed to be a satire but ended up going way to far and became just plain stupid and dumb, especially the Puppet scene. From there season 10 never really recovered and Scifi Channel had no choice but to can the show. So IMHO it's nobodies fault but the Directors and Cast why the show got cancelled and while I really believe that SciFi channel is one of the most bone headed stations in existence, this one is not there fault.
Oh, boy... where do I start? Firstly, why are there so many 'reviews' of this film several months before it has been released? Folks, please refrain from the lame "I love Stargate - I hope this is good" posts and save the fanboi gushing for AFTER the release date or Gateworld's forums.
Now, on to the meat... I've seen the leaked copy that has been floating around the internet several times now and I'm sorry to have to agree with others that have also seen it and posted their previews -- this film seems rushed in attempting to tell a story deserving of several television episodes and IMHO the production quality doesn't appear to be any greater than a standard SG-1 episode. The ending is especially cheesy and the overall feel and tone of the movie didn't 'dress to impress'. And don't get me started on the blatant rip-offs from other science fiction franchises (don't worry, you won't have any trouble spotting them). I'm well aware that the writers like to have fun and add intended humor into their stories, however it is becoming forced and tiresome and they really should return to taking their stories a little more seriously (please!).
If the producers had a budget nearly five times that of a standard episode (a standard episode budgeted approximately $1mm and this movie sporting a budget of $5mm for twice the screen time) where was it spent? Certainly not on anything appearing in the movie that I could tell. Aside from a few moments of helicopter shots of characters traversing beautiful mountainous terrain, it's the same tired old village set redressed yet again to serve this story's purpose.
While I am very pleased to have the opportunity to view one more adventure of SG-1, I'm left hoping that the next direct-to-DVD movie to be released, Continuum, carries more impact both visually and in the storytelling as this movie left me disappointed and wanting.
All that being said, I look forward to adding this movie to my Stargate DVD collection the day of release.
